Aynsley, senior financial services consultant, has both industry

Michael
Aynsley entered the banking industry immediately after leaving
High School. Working with Banque Nationale de
Paris Bank Treasury in Sydney from 1978 to 1981 provided his
initial training in Treasury management, operations, dealing in
cash and short term securities. With deregulation of the Australian
banking industry, he joined Amsterdam Rotterdam Bank
NV Financial Markets Division in Sydney from 1981 to 1983 -
becoming a Senior Manager in the team hired to establish the
domestic merchant bank – including management of onshore and
offshore funding, short term debt securities trading and
establishment parent debt funding facilities.
In 1983,
Mike joined Security Pacific
National Bank, later acquired by Bank of America, in a
number of Global Roles based in Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo
and London over an eight-year period from 1983 to 1991.
Starting as Deputy General Manager,
Sydney & Melbourne, Mike established and managed the Melbourne
branch of Security Pacific and established the first derivatives
capability of the Bank globally. This was followed by international
postings including Vice President &
General Manager, Tokyo – where Mike established the Asian hub
of the global capital markets business of the global merchant bank;
and Executive Director,
London – where he re-structured and down-sized the European debt
capital markets business for the bank.
Mike
returned to Australia to become Deputy Managing Director
- managing the re-structuring and downsizing of the Australian
merchant bank across all divisions (Financial Markets, Corporate
Lending, Structured Finance, Leasing) as part of Security Pacific's
sale to Bank of America.
From 1992
to 1998, Mike was General Manager, Global Wholesale Financial
Services for the National Australia Bank,
during which period he:
- was
directly responsible for the strategic formation of the Global
Wholesale Financial Services division of the Bank (now NAB
Capital);
- was
directly responsible for the formation and management of the Global
Financial Markets Division – re-engineering and staffing of the
global business, development and implementation of the global
strategy and ongoing management of trading, sales, and distribution
activities;
- established the Group
Treasury division of the Bank including re-structuring of the Asset
& Liability Management unit, Group Structural Funding, Balance
Sheet / Capital Management functions, establishment of the group’s
market risk management capabilities including implementation of
Basle I compliance framework, group financial markets support
infrastructure, with regular Executive and Board reporting
responsibilities; and
- was a
Member of numerous risk management and governance committees of the
Bank at enterprise level.
Mike left
NAB to become a Deloitte Consulting Global Partner
in Banking & Financial Services from 1999 to 2003
-
during which period he established and led the development of the
regional Wholesale / Institutional Banking practice for Asia
Pacific region servicing large regional and major domestic
financial institutions, focusing on corporate, business and wealth
management segments. He was a regional mentor and advisor in the
development of Deloitte Consulting's enterprise risk
management, Basle II regulatory compliance framework and
implementation methodology and toolset; a Member of the global
financial services leadership committee; and built and managed a
team of specialised financial services operatives covering a
diverse range of areas including, business strategy, sales,
marketing, distribution, finance, risk and technology.
Mike
subsequently held roles as a Senior Executive for the Australian &
New Zealand Banking Group, including in various strategic and
risk related areas of the Institutional Bank. He served as
Chief
Risk Officer for the ANZ Bank (NZ) and the National Bank
of NZ – travelling routinely between Sydney, Melbourne and
Wellington, NZ. In this period he was responsible for all
Risk activities in New Zealand across ANZ (NZ) and the National
Bank of New Zealand, reporting to the CEO, Group CRO and the ANZNB
Board Risk Management Committee. He established a team of
approximately 150 risk professionals through the Integration,
re-structuring and development of risk teams in both banks,
covering Traded and non-Traded Market Risk, Operational &
Technology Risk, Retail and Corporate Credit Risk, Compliance,
Integration Risk, Basel II; defined and implemented an Enterprise
Risk governance model including Group aligned risk
frameworks and policies,
Executive, Group and Board Risk Management Committee reporting
structure and work plan; and established strategic development
plans for each risk discipline.
After
leaving the ANZ Bank, Mike focused on completing two formal
courses. Firstly, the flag-ship Directors course of the Australian
Institute of Company Directors - completed in June 2006. Secondly a
Full-Time MBA program at Macquarie University’s graduate school of
management – completed in September 2007 with a Distinction level
average and a grade point average of 3.56. Major streams pursued
were Finance, Organisational Sustainability and Strategy. Mike
also undertook a number of consulting assignments over this period
and is now back consulting full time.
