The Rollspan product was invented by Australian engineer, toolmaker and precision machinist
Mr John Silady and was awarded an Australian Patent in March 2007. Mr Silady is a Director of Rollspan Pty Ltd together with Mr Kevin Bostridge and Mr Peter Aynsley.

Visually, Rollspan looks like a cross between an I-beam and a RHS. It can be manufactured in depths from 100mm to 450mm, in either standard or custom lengths. It has significant competitive advantages over a number of existing products such as Z-sections and C-sections. An abstract from the Australian Patent is as follows:

Rollspan section 253.jpg

Abstract of Patent
A structural rectangular hollow section member comprising a top panel, a bottom panel and opposing side panels; each said panel formed by a roll-forming process from flat metal sheet; said side panels provided with upper and lower flange portions; said flange portions enfolded by respective enveloping portions along opposing edges of said top panel and of said bottom panel; and wherein indentations are formed at predetermined intervals along said enveloping portions; said indentations extending sufficiently into said enveloping portions to cause corresponding indentations in said flange portions; said indentations providing resistance to longitudinal movement between said flange portions and said enveloping portions; said movement including movement induced by torsional loads.

With the Australian Patent now awarded, Rollspan Pty Ltd is gearing up for commercial production.
